Ministry Assisting Neighbors In Need With Agape

Manna is a partnership of several churches that provides assistance with utility bills, birth certificates, class fees, driver?s license, ID cards, laundry, medications, and monthly bus passes. As you can imagine, the need is great.

Please consider donating to Manna on the 4th Sunday of every month (beginning again this Sunday, July 25):  All of the cash offerings (and checks made out to St. Andrew's with "Manna" in the memo line) are donated to Manna.

Seeking Food Donations for the Food Bank

The Food Bank is collecting non-perishable food again. Our Food Bank basket is in the narthex. Please consider bringing in some donations, especially baby food and other baby items.  Thank you.

From Willie James Jennings, Acts.

?That line is the difference between existence and nonexistence, between the story of a people that lives on and a story that has come to an end. Peter?s sisters and brothers in the new faith are quite serious about that faith?s sure foundation in Israel, and now this traveling apostle must give a justification for his actions. He must suture together a known faithfulness with an unknown faithfulness and bring together obedience to ancient Word and Spirit with obedience to Spirit and present Word.? Pg. 116

?Why does Luke need to repeat in detail the events of chapter ten?  For emphasis of course, but more importantly he does it to show the breaking open of a life, Peter?s life, and to show the breaking open of a people life, Israel?s life. The drama must be told in detail, so the hearers can begin to see their lives in it. God spoke to Peter, and now through Peter God is speaking to the saints gathered there to hear. The power of God is present in weakness, in the voice of one disciple of Jesus who simply tells the truth of what has happened to him and what God did through him.? Pg. 117

?The past, though important, is never the point for the life of faith. The point is the present moment with the living God who is with us, beckoning us to communion. The God who speaks to us now calls us into the risk of hearing a new word, a word that orients us toward the unanticipated and the unprecedented where the reconciling God is active.? Pg. 120

?Not everyone who believes in Jesus is ready for newness. Not everyone who follows the savior can come into the unanticipated places of the Spirit?s work. Some saints don?t like surprises?.The Spirit always brings to the church specific knowledge of the world and the specific sites of divine concern. A church that knows not the particular needs of its time and place is a church that has not heard the Spirit speaking. The church is marked by the Spirit with an inescapable action and an irrefutable demand----we must do what we can to address the particular needs the Holy One confronts us with.? Pg. 123-125

Mutual Invitation:   What struck you in our readings this time?

  • Paul tells his story all over again. There are many times a theme or a complete story is retold in the Bible. Can you name a few? Why do you think this is done?
  • Acts 11:19-30.  Antioch in Syria was one of the places in the ancient world which functioned as crossroads of culture and trade. It was a great, thriving, crowded, cosmopolitan city. From this passage, what significant events happened in Antioch to make it important in the history of the early church? How do you think today?s meaning of Christian compares with what people in Antioch meant by Christian?
  • The law was the equivalent of the national flag at a time when the whole nation felt under intense and increasing pressure. To welcome Gentiles as equal brothers and sister must have looked like fraternizing with the enemy.
    • What is equivalent to the Jewish law or the status quo in in our time? Who is perceived as our enemy that we should not break bread with?
  • Does God change God?s mind about the law or does our understanding change?
  • What does an inclusive church and table look like to you?
